Madagascar has required pictorial health warnings on cigarette, chewing tobacco and snuff tobacco packages since January 1, 2013 (October 1, 2012 at the manufacturer level). A pictorial health warning must cover 50% of the front of the package, and an accompanying text-only warning must cover the bottom 50% of the package. Different sets of four warnings are rotated annually.
Terms such as “light”, “ultra-light”, “mild” and “flavoured” in Malagasy or any other language are prohibited.
