Germany

Summary:

Germany implemented their current health warnings policy in 2003 as a result of the European Commission labelling directive. Germany is required to display text warnings that cover a minimum of 30% of the "front" and a minimum of 40% of the "back" of packages. Packages carry one of two warnings on the "front": either "Smoking kills" or "Smoking seriously harms you or those around you." One of sixteen additional warnings appears on the "back" of packages.

Germany also prohibits the terms "light" and "mild" from appearing on packages.

As well, Germany requires tar, nicotine, and carbon monoxide emission numbers to appear on the side of packages. These emission numbers are generated using the ISO machine smoking method.
